Hankyong National UniversityGenetic Engineering Institute

Contributing to Productivity Enhancement, Public Health, and National Economic Power through Research on Life Sciences using Genetic Engineering Technology
Article 3 (Application for Establishment and Support for Establishment) of Hankyong National University Institute prescribes that For the foundation of an Institute, an Application must be submitted to the President via the Director of Industry-University Cooperation, with four or more full-time faculty members as Promoters. The Genetic Engineering Institute was founded in November 1996 following the Articles of Incorporation of the Institute of Genetic Engineering attached to Hankyong National University.
The Institute aims to contribute to the Improvement of Productivity, Public Health, and the National Economy through Researches in the Life Sciences using Genetic Engineering Technology, and furthermore, to contribute to the Welfare of the Human Race. Genetic engineering is the Science and Technology that will lead to the third Production Revolution. In particular, it is the most closely related to National Competitiveness in recent years in the Production of Pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the Institute conducts Academic Research and Commercialization in the fields of Animals, Plants, and Microorganisms using Genetic Engineering Technology to contribute to the National Development by increasing Food Resources, Development of New Medicines and Developing new medicines and Energy Resources.

Operation and Development Plan
- Specialization/Characterization Direction of University belonging to the Institute
- All Full-time professors participating in the Institute of Genetic Engineering are involved in the Graduate School of Biological and Environmental Information and Communication.
- Under the Academic-Industrial Cooperation Agreement with Rural Development Administration and Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Gyeonggi-do, students can expand to a Master or Doctoral Degree.
- Planning for Specialization / Characterization of the Institute
- 현재Currently, the Institute consists of three departments, Animal Research Department, Plant Research department, and Microbiological Research Department. Each department focuses on Biotechnology-Related Research Areas, maintaining an Organic cooperative system.
- The Institute intends to contribute to the National Development through the Development of New Medicines, the Development of Energy Resources and Environmental Protection, and the Improvement of the Environment through the Academic Research and Practical Application of the Plant and Microorganisms using Genetic Engineering Technology.
- Maintaining close cooperative relations within each of the three research departments, continuing Academic Conferences, holding International Joint Educational Seminars once a year, preserving the Findings of Research, and Promoting Publicly at home and abroad, and expanding the Publishing Business to be applied in industrial sites. The Institute publishes Newsletter, Proceeding, Training Booklet, Etc. if necessary.
- Currently, ten full-time professors are participating in the Institute
- Most of them are highly competitive in terms of National Projects and have secured several types of Research Funds in recognition of their Performance.
- If the institute can spend its own overhead costs, it can be operated independently at the Institute's own expense and will be the basis for securing the Independence of the Institute.
Plan to recruit and foster Full-time Researchers
- Specialization / Specialization Direction
- To secure Full-Time Research Professors and achieve Research Objectives, Outstanding Full-Time Research Professors from home and abroad are invited in cooperation with the Graduate School of Biological and Environmental Information and Communication (Major in Animal Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Genomic Information Engineering) under the Recruitment Order of the President.
- The Institute will make a condition that they can reside in the Institue to be dedicated to research, and lectures will be offered one class per semester at the Graduate School of Biological and Environmental Information and Communication.
- After completing the Intensive Research Project in the future, they will continue to maintain their status as the Dedicated Research Professors at the Graduate School of Biological Information and Communication.
- To support the economic difficulties of Full-time Researchers, the Institute plans to allow them to lecture once every semester at the Graduate School of Biological and Environmental Information and Communication and will utilize them as Adjunct Professors of the Graduate School of Bioinformatics and Communication.
- In addition to securing Researchers at the Institute, the Researching Capacity of the Institute is expected to be maximized by cultivating Human Resources in the fields of Livestock production through Somatic Cell Cloning and Transformation, New Plant Development, and Environmental DNA Bio-material Development. The leap forward in the field of biotechnology so that the Institute will be able to leap forward in the field of Biotechnology through Cooperation with Biotechnology Institutes of Other Universities.
Connection Plan of Education and Research
- Plan to open Courses in the Institute (Whether to accept Credit) or to install and operate the Graduate Course
- Professors participating in theInstitute are involved in the Specialized Graduate School, so it is not considered that additional graduate courses are required. However, a further major session can be opened if necessary.
- Manpower Training Program Operation Plan
- The Institute plans to train experts by utilizing three major fields, such as Animals, Plants, and Genomes, which are currently opened as Biotechnology Majors of Graduate School and also plan to utilize the Full-time Research Professors at the Genetic Engineering Institute to open a new Biotechnology Research Course.
- Other Connection Plan of Education and Research
- The Institute will continue to carry out the Vacation Life Science Class, that the Institute has conducted in connection with the vacation for Elementary and Secondary School Students.
